ABOUT ME

I'm Lauren Scotton

Recently, I earned a Master of Music in Music Education after completing a Master of Music in Viola Performance and String Pedagogy at the University of Oregon. I studied viola with Dr. Leslie Straka, Dr. Arnaud Ghillebaert, and string pedagogy with Lillie Manis. As the recipient of the Eugene Symphony Orchestra Graduate Teaching Fellowship, I am both a section member of the Eugene Symphony Orchestra and a teacher at the Community Music Institute.

In 2015, I graduated from St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minnesota) with a Bachelor of Arts in Music on viola with a Concentration in Management Studies. At St. Olaf College, I studied viola with Charles Gray and was a member of the nationally and internationally recognized St. Olaf Orchestra that strives for the highest professional standards and tours annually under the direction of Steven Amundsen. During my undergraduate studies, I spent the spring semester of 2014 in Milan, Italy studying viola with Mauro Righini and had an assistantship with the Milano Classica Orchestra performing on both modern and baroque viola. Prior to my undergraduate studies, I studied viola with Danny Seidenberg in Salem, Oregon. I have spent summers studying at both Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont and the High Peaks Festival in the Catskill Mountains (NY). In the summer of 2016, I received Britt Festival Orchestra‘s viola fellowship. During this fellowship, I performed alongside members of the Britt Orchestra under the baton of Music Director Teddy Abrams, was mentored by professional orchestral musicians, and programmed and performed several outreach concerts in a string quartet with the other fellows.

I strive to provide opportunities in musically under-served communities. In 2011, I created a summer string program for the local Boys and Girls Club in Salem, Oregon, called Summer Street Strings, in which I taught string techniques to club members (grades 1-12). During my last year at St. Olaf College, I started a student-led partnership, called Musical Connections, at the Greenvale Community School in Northfield, Minnesota. The program offered weekly lessons to elementary and middle school students instructed by a St. Olaf student or musician-mentor at no cost. In addition to the viola, I hold interests in arts administration, business management, running, and cooking.
